A Restored 1800s Main Street on the Missouri River
St. Charles was founded around 1769 as Les Petites Côtes by French-Canadian fur trader Louis Blanchette — the third-oldest city in Missouri. Today its Historic Main Street, within the St. Charles Historic District, lines restored 19th-century brick buildings with restaurants and specialty shops along the riverfront, hosting festivals nearly every month of the year.

Where the Corps of Discovery Set Off
William Clark arrived in St. Charles on May 16, 1804, and Meriwether Lewis four days later — the expedition’s last stop in an established town for more than two and a half years. St. Charles later served as Missouri’s first state capital from 1821 to 1826; the First Missouri State Capitol State Historic Site can still be toured today.
